Every time some poor sap dies, it is like a concert to me. Whenever you go to a funeral, take notice of the theme. The themes for funerals are always special. They have a casket filled with the treasured items from loved ones. If the person was into a particular sports team, these items may be little trinkets with that team’s logo on it. Like tiny footballs, little helmets, and even pocket knives. Balloons at funerals are commonplace as well. More recently, we have television screens that can show slide shows of the person’s life through imagery.
Sometimes the room is decorated with a pirate theme and have pictures of massive ships on the walls. Other times, they are decorated in a space theme. With stars, planets and sometimes magical starships travelling through the unknown parts of outer space. The themes can be a bit to girly for my taste though. There was the infamous ‘Mean Girls’ theme at that one showing but that’s what happens when the person is only fifteen.
The themes are only the icing on the cake though. The lighting is like the decorations. You can’t celebrate a person’s life without the proper lighting. Does a band not have lighting when they perform? What would any live show be without the exciting lights? This part is dependent on the theme, which we discussed earlier. For the gothic theme, the lighting should be subtle but powerful. Having a dark room with the casket the only beacon of light is a powerful image. Other times, the room itself is very bright except for the dark areas around the body. Depending on the theme or where the body is displayed deeply impacts the effects of the lighting.
However, the cake itself is the music at the service. By far the most important part. So I’m going to share with you the secrets of good quality funeral music:
You can make a lot of observations about a person just by looking at their playlist of choice. Even if you do not know the deceased at all, hearing their music can tell stories. It’s always very special whenever I receive a person who was in a band. You get to hear what they created and are treated to their legacy.
For the quality of the music isn’t important but the message. What does the music say? How does it make others feel?? What should we feel in front of this person? Finally, the music itself has to have more than one meaning. What you experience should be different then from I would. You feel sad. So I am glad. You feel grateful. So I am jealous. You feel helpless. So I am helpful.
After making all the preparations, the funeral can now begin. There is a wake for people to come in and pay there respects. I personally like to make the rooms look nice based on the selected theme and décor. There’s usually seats, sometimes a fresh sign-in book on a mahogany podium.
Then the service begins with all the correct music and people are always welcome to attend. The final send-off for the deceased individual ends with an artistic display. A display that is dedicated to making sure everyone knows exactly who society has lost and what was taken from them. Every deceased person is represents an experience no one will ever have again. In the end, the epic display for the deceased gentlemen ends. The curtain closes and visitors quietly go home.
Then I kiss him on the forehead and put him in the ground.
